A passion that many students on an English course in Edinburgh have for the city is that it is definitely not lacking in open space. Picturing a city, people often imagine a hectic concrete jungle- but not Edinburgh. Whether it’s hiking into the sky on Arthur’s Seat, barbecuing with mates on The Meadows, taking in the view in Princes Street Gardens or wandering aimlessly through The Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh residents and tourists cherish the time to chill out in the relaxing atmosphere of it’s open spaces. However, the city tucks away its hidden gems for its more loving inhabitants. Amazing secret gardens are scattered around Edinburgh; The Archivist’s Garden inspired by local myths and folklore, and Sandeman House Garden’s belonging to The Scottish Book Trust are both local favourites.
It may be due to the adaptation to be able to still look good in any given Scottish weather, or purely because of their eccentric individuality, but either way the people of Edinburgh pride themselves in their uniquely quirky sense of fashion. When arriving in the city it’s hard no to feel influenced by the style of the locals. But luckily enough, the city is sprinkled with independent clothing stores selling their inspiring and artistic wares, modern clothes shops offering their take of Scottish classics, and of course the usual offering of high street retailers. Students in Edinburgh can seek the unconventional at The Grassmarket- an uber-cool selection of vintage and boutique stores that overlooks the Edinburgh Castle.
Foodies rejoice, as another great thing about Edinburgh is its incredible offering of restaurants and cafes. In fact, Edinburgh has more restaurants per head than any other UK city. Serving up traditional dishes and food from around the world, you can find everything from Michelin starred venues to two-for-a-tenner pub grub. Take to wandering the windy, layered streets of the city, you’ll come across some fantastic finds and can build your own personalized list or preferred eateries instead of taking the usual recommendations. Whatever is tantalizing your taste buds, you can find it in Edinburgh!
